Have you ever driven somewhere and arrived wondered how you got there? Lain in bed at night wondering whether you locked the back door? These examples describe a state called waking sleep. Your body continues to function while your mind is somewhere else. This is described in Chapter 1 AWARENESS in my book Living in the Now.

But here is a truly extreme example of waking sleep! A New Zealand woman drove for hundreds of kilometres while asleep, sending text messages from her cellphone along the way. Police were alerted by a friend who said the woman had gone out in the car after taking sleeping tablets. They traced her car after learning that she had gone sleep-driving a few months previously and was fond of the beach. After 5 hours on the road,  she was found slumped over the wheel in the driveway of a house she used to live in, with no recollection of her journey!!

About Jill M Jacques

I grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, and have spent most of my life here doing the usual things - marrying, having children and caring for an array of pets ranging from dogs to silkworms and chameleons. I first became interested in philosphy and its practical application in everyday life in my early 20s and spent many years as part of a group that pursued this goal. Drawing on this experience, I have been running "How to live in the Now" programmes for over 10 years. I wrote this book in response to requests from group members for something "simple and practical". I tend to see the funny side of life situations and enjoy writing humorous back pages as well as short stories and some poetry. Some of these have been published. Being here now is what really matters.
